When Vesuvius erupted, people rushed in to attempt to rescue others who were unable to get out of the town on their own. However, the intense heat, in addition to the soil and ash, killed most people instantly and destroyed the town. Rescuers were forced to abandon their efforts and the town was forgotten for about 1500 years. Today, the ruins of Pompeii are a popular tourist attraction, and excavations have ended.
